Debby

“Debby,” a mother of two, was living with her boyfriend and children. One winter evening, the couple was having a small argument that quickly escalated. The boyfriend grabbed Debby by the hair, started shaking her, and hit her in the face twice. Her daughter begged him to stop.

As Debby and her children fled outside to escape, her boyfriend threw her car keys and phone off into the distance. The boyfriend began choking Debby, saying he should kill her. The police arrived and arrested the boyfriend, but he was out the next morning on bail. Desperate for protection, Debby turned to VLAS. Debby’s VLAS attorney helped her obtain a two-year protective order that barred her abuser from having any contact with her. Debby now has some peace of mind that her abuser is legally required to stay away from her and her children.

Every day, VLAS attorneys help people like Debby in need of protection from abusers, landlords threatening illegal evictions, predatory lenders, and many others.
